Freeze Warning and Vegetable Donation

11/28/2011

Dear Gardeners,
We turned off the water at the garden last night as a precaution. We have very little frost damage.  Most everything looks really good. Mary Ann and I harvested Mary Ann’s, Steve and Shelley’s, Anna’s and the donation bed and I took it to Good Samaritans. They were very happy to see all the vegetables.

We picked basil, lettuce, turnip greens, swiss chard, spinach, hot radish and greens, large cabbage leaves and yes three tomatoes from Steve and Shelley’s bed.

Everyone should be very proud of our food donations to help people that do not see anything fresh. I asked Good Samaritans and they said the lettuce we took a few weeks ago really went over well.

Thank you all for coming together to make this happen.
See you at the garden, Judy

Thank you letter from Good Samaratin was received

11/25/2011

To thank us for the donation of lettuce to their program.  I cannot post documents on the site, if I can find another way to post it I will.  Just letting you all know how thankful they are of the donation.  Keep up the good work.  Connie

BT applied on November 23, 2011 to the Cabbage due to Cabbage Looper Worms.

11/25/2011

November 23, 2011
The cabbage looper problem was not solved.  ACCG is applying B T, Thuricide tonight at dusk to the garden plots. The worms have to eat the BT. BT only controls caterpillars. This is an organic chemical that the City of Rockport uses to spray for wooly worms. It dissipates in sun light and can be applied on the day of harvest if needed. Please keep an eye out to see if we have solved the problem. Anyone wanting to know more may contact Judy.
See you in the garden, Judy.

Lettuce has bolted

11/25/2011

Your lettuce has blooms. You will need to remove the plant and replant if you want a continuing crop of lettuce. I have kept lettuce going nearly year round, it depends on the weather. Please remember to keep an eye out for burrs, removing them when we find them will really help this spring. We are receiving several new gardeners apps due to the current gardeners enthusiasm and the web site has generated several as well. Thank you all. See you soon in the garden, Judy

Cabbage Worm Hunt Tonight at the garden

11/15/2011

November 15, 2011
7 pm this evening a group of gardeners are planning to go worm hunting. You will need a good flashlight and be willing to mash the buggers. See you at the garden.

ACCG Update

11/14/2011

ACCG Cabbages with holes have small green worms beneath the leaves. Please check your cabbages and remove any worms you find. You may remove the larger leaves with the worm holes in them to help control the worm population. The removal of leaves is a suggestion only. Some of the gardeners are removing the larger leaves to make room for smaller crops and they are cooking the large cabbage leaves.

Thank you for showing up to dig grass burrs out of the community garden. The hour was well used and a lot of grass burrs were dug, however we will need to stay alert it seems the burrs are trying to hide from us. You can go back over where you have just worked and find burrs that you know were not there moments before. Please remember to remove any burrs or plants from the garden that were dug up.
