March General Meeting has been changed

2/24/2012

to Saturday, March 17th at 2 pm at the garden.  Please make every effort to attend as we need to take pictures. Bring the entire family if possible.  We would like to see everyone pictured with their garden wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day.  We are a 501c3 and depend on donations to continue building and maintaining the garden, these pictures will make the strongest statement.

Mulching Party on

2/22/2012

March 3rd, Saturday at 2pm, please plan on being at the garden to mulch your beds, this a dusty process but it is a must to conserve water and help our plants grow. Please bring a small scoop and bucket to carry the mulch to your beds.

Again if anyone has small hand tools to leave at the garden please feel free to do so. I have left a nylon trellis for your inspection on bed 7, please check it out, it cost under $5 at Walmart and is 5'X15' this could be the answer we need for trellising up tomatoes, cucumbers or beans.

If you are like me, cutting your hands on wire or wood trellises is a problem. You could get as many as three trellises out of this 15'.

Thanks goes out to Josh and the Venturing Crew for the new beds they built for us

2/21/2012

We are proud to say that Josh and the Venturing Crew have installed and filled not 10 but 15 raised beds and all are now spoken for.  We have a total of 26 raised beds.  Reservations are now being taken, if we are fortunate enough to receive donations making it possible for us to build more raised beds, we will do so.

The garden is growing and we cannot be more proud of our citizens in Aransas County for their support. The gardeners have donated vegetables to Good Samaritan several times since our first planting October 13, 2011.

If anyone wants to volunteer in the garden, you can e-mail us at accgarden@gmail.com.

Thanks to everyone who have worked so hard to make the garden a reality.

Gardeners, check your beds for fertilizer if you have not yet planted your beds

2/21/2012

(webmaster here-another message I did not get posted when it came in on February 10th and is still relevant to all gardeners).

We will be measuring the fertilizer and bagging it for you to mix into your beds, 2 pm Saturday at the garden.

To make the fertilizer convenient for you, we will place your bag in your bed hidden on the right hand corner of your bed. You may start planting when you are ready and if anyone needs assistance, please ask any of the directors.

ACCG Gardeners - February 13, 2012

2/21/2012

(webmaster here- I apologize for this post not making it to the blog before February 18th-I have been real busy with another project and have been under the weather too.  I am still posting this because it is still relevant to the 2011 gardeners and the 2012 gardeners.  Thanks Judy).

Note from Judy begins here;

Saturday - February 18th from 1pm to 3pm the directors plan on being at the garden to help you plant, to assist with the garden amenities and to answer questions.

Thank you to all the gardeners that helped with bagging fertilizer Saturday 11th. Several gardeners started planting their beds and they look real nice.

The watering system is state of the art drip irrigation that is programmed to water each bed at night. There are water hoses with hand cut offs and a watering can available. Hand watering should be limited to the first two weeks after planting and transplanting. We have found this to be one of the best conservation methods to date.

We have made mulch available to cover the water grid in each bed this keeps evaporation to a minimum, two to four inches of mulch over the entire bed is necessary to get the best results. We suggest you do not mulch over newly seeded areas, wait till the plants are up with their 3rd or 4th leaf then mulch to the base of each plant.

2011 Gardeners: please remember to move your mulch off before adding your fertilizer and a bag of Lady Bug Compost. If you incorporate the mulch it will keep your fertilizers from working as well.

Anyone wishing to donate hand shut offs for the hoses, hand tools, shovels or buckets please leave them in the box with the green cover.

While you are gardening please be careful and do not impale tools into the ground outside your beds as the irrigation lines are there. Since the irrigation system is only on at night you will not be aware if a line is nicked.

Donated seeds will be available at each scheduled meeting or by telephoning Judy at 729-2849.

Anyone with questions please contact one of the directors we are here to assist you.

See you in the garden,

ACCG Directors

Judy wanted us to share this letter with all of the gardeners

2/21/2012

Good Samaritans does not regularly distribute fresh produce to their clients as they have no way to store or refrigerate it.  If you have produce in your garden that you are not going to be able to use or harvest (out of town, etc.), please let Judy (or any other board member) know and we will make sure it gets to either Good Samaritans or to the charity of your choice.  The Aransas County Community Garden Board of Directors
